Het gewone leven

valt op dit moment nogal zwaar, en dan is het moeilijk om je op UFO’s te concentreren. Maar dat is nou het leuke van zo’n prutsrol, als je iets nieuws wilt uitproberen dan pak je gewoon je prutsrol en gaat lekker spelen. En deze keer dacht ik wat naaldkant te oefenen.

Het eerste vakje zijn netsteek variaties. Dit is een redelijk snelle manier om een ruimte te vullen, maar zoals je kunt zien valt hier nog wel wat te verbeteren om het allemaal netjes te krijgen. De stofsteek in het middelste vakje is een stuk beter gelukt, het is wel een beetje strak uitgevallen. Deze steek geeft een mooie vulling, maar kost wel veel meer tijd en garen.

Het derde vakje wil nog niet erg lukken en ik denk dat ik het kant er voor de derde keer eruit knip. Maar eerst ga ik Pa en Ma een handje helpen.

Needle lace
Ordinary life is rather hard at the moment, and then it’s difficult to concentrate on your UFO’s. But that’s the nice thing about a prutsrol, if you want to try something different, you just pull out your roll and have a play. This time I thought I’d practice a little bit of needle lace.

The first square

are detached buttonhole stitch variations. This is a reasonably quick way of filling a space, but as you can see I could use a bit more practice to get it all neat and even. The cloth stitch in the middle square is a looking a lot better, even though I pulled it a bit tight. The stitch gives a nice filled look, but costs a lot more time and thread.

The third square is proofing to be very tricky and I think I will have to cut out the lace for the third time. But first I'm going to give my Mum and Dad a hand.

Het leuke van

meedoen aan een exchange is dat je niet alleen iemand kan verwennen, maar ook dat jij zelf ook verwent wordt. Zeker met internationale exchanges is het altijd afwachten wanneer iets aankomt. Mijn pakketje voor Teresa is al ruim twee weken onderweg naar Amerika, dus toen Leslie liet weten dat ze afgelopen dinsdag haar pakketje voor mij op de post had gedaan, ging ik ervan uit dat ik nog minstens twee tot drie weken moest wachten.

Maar nee hoor, gisteren reikte de postbode mij een grote envelop uit Amerika aan met daarin:

Een patroon voor een boekenlegger van Sally Rudkin
Een voorjaarspatroontje van Heart in Hand Needleart
Een complete kit van La-D-Da, met zijde en linnen (te gek!)
Een prachtige scharen etui met bijpassende fob (ik kan nog een hoop leren over afwerkingen)
En een mooie schaar

Ik ben dus totaal onverwacht vreselijk verwend! En leuk dat dat is, ik kan het iedereen aanraden.

The fun of

participating in an exchange is not only the fact that you can pamper someone, but you get spoilt as well. Especially with international exchanges you always have to wait and see when something arrives. My parcel for Teresa is already two weeks on it´s way to America, so when Leslie let me know that she had mailed her exchange last Tuesday, I assumed that I still had to wait two or three weeks.

But no! Yesterday the mailman handed me a big envelope from America with in it:

A bookmark pattern from Sally Rudkin
A spring pattern from Heart in Hand Needleart
A complete kit from La-D-Da, with silk and linnen (Yummie!)
A stunning scissor case with matching fob (I still have a lot to learn about finishing these things)
And a lovely pair of scissors

So totally unexpected I got spoiled rotten! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Leslie!

Patchwork

Vandaag wil ik een update laten zien van “Patchwork” van Jan Houtman. Dit is eigenlijk een camping project, maar ik heb het de laatste keer mee naar huis genomen omdat ik de letters uit wilde werken.

Het oorspronkelijke patroon heeft namelijk “De Haemmaker” tussen de motieven geborduurd. De Haemmaker was het huis waar Jan Houtman heeft gewoond. Dat had voor hem een betekenis, maar voor mij wat minder, dus dat wilde ik veranderen. Ik heb heel even gedacht om mijn naam erin te borduren, maar ik heb toch gekozen om de tekst te veranderen in “Patchwork”. Mijn vorige Jan Houtman, “Tree of Life”, had precies hetzelfde alfabet waar “De Haemmaker” mee gemaakt was, dus dat was een gelukje. Nu kon ik redelijk snel een patroontje in elkaar zetten met “Patchwork”. Dat heb ik gelijk maar even geborduurd (uiteraard) en nu lijkt het er toch op dat hij ooit nog af komt.


Patchwork

Today I want to show an update of my “Patchwork” by Jan Houtman. This is a camping project, but I took it home last time so I could sort out the letters.

The original pattern has “De Haemmaker” embroidered in between the motives. De Haemmaker was the name of the house where Jan Houtman used to live. That house had a lot of meaning for him, but not so much for me, so I wanted to change that. Briefly I thought to stitch my name, but in the end I decided to change the text to “Patchwork”. My previous Jan Houtman, “Tree of Life”, had exactly the same alphabet that was used to make “De Haemmaker”, which was lucky for me. Now I could reasonably quickly create a pattern with “Patchwork”. I've stitched it already (naturally) and now it looks like it will actually get finished at some point.

Pril leven

Lang zal ik leven, lang zal ik leven…
Helaas, dat prille leven van de titel slaat niet op mij, want ik ben weer een jaartje ouder vandaag. En met mijn 44 jaar loont het voorlopig ook niet meer om de cijfers om te draaien.

Maar die titel slaat wel op de kikkervisjes in mijn vijver. Wij hadden vorige maand al 3 klompen kikkerdril uit de vijver gevist en overgeplaatst naar de sloot. Maar er bleek nog een nest onderin te hebben gezeten, en die zwemmen nu dus rustig rond. De vijver heeft (nog) geen vissen, dus de kikkervisjes kunnen op hun gemak groot worden. Tenminste, dat dachten ze.

Want ik heb voor mijn verjaardag een groot stuk vijver folie gekregen, mijn vijver is namelijk halverwege ergens lek (vandaar ook dat er nog geen visjes in zwemmen). En om dat folie te kunnen installeren, zal de vijver leeg moeten. Om nou tientalle kikkervisjes te vermoorden vind ik ook zo wat, maar ik heb ook geen zin om met honderden emmertjes van de vijver naar de sloot te lopen. Voorlopig regent het nog te vaak en te hard om die vijver leeg te krijgen, dus ik heb nog even de tijd om een oplossing te verzinnen.

Young life
Happy birthday to me, Happy birthday to me….
Unfortunately, that young life in the subject is not for me, because I’m yet another year older today. And when you’re 44 swapping digits doesn’t work anymore either.

The subject does fit the tatpoles in my pond. Last month we already moved three large lumps of frogspawn from our pond to the canal. But as it turned out, there was another lump at the bottom of the pond, and those tatpoles are now merrily swimming around. The pond doesn’t have any fish (yet), so the tatpoles have all the time in the world to grow up. Or at least, that’s what they think.

Because I was given a large sheet of pond foil, you see, my pond is somewhere along the halfway line leaking water that needs to be fixed (hence the lack of fish). And if I want to install the foil, the pond needs to be empty. I’m not too keen on the idea of murdering dozens of tatpoles, but neither do I want to walk from the pond to the canal with hundreds of buckets of water. But right now it is raining too hard and too often to be able to empty the pond, so I have some time to think of a solution

Kaart weven

Van de spullen die ik vorige week gekregen heb, vond ik de weef kaarten toch wel erg intrigerend. Dus dat moest uitgeprobeerd worden. Ik snap nog niet helemaal hoe het werkt, maar het werkt wel! Ik heb wat breigarens uit mijn voorraad gehaald, door de 4 gaatjes van 24 kaarten twee draden rood en twee draden groen gehaald (1 draad per gaatje), en ik ben aan het weven en draaien gegaan.

Het eerste stukje ging dus voor geen meter. De spanning op de verschillende draden was niet gelijk, de helft van de draden hing nog door, terwijl de rest al strak stond. Dus het geweven stukje maar weer uitgehaald, en de boel opnieuw gespannen. Toen ging het een stuk beter, en inmiddels heb ik al een klein stukje geweven.

De wol die ik gebruik blijkt niet zo handig te zijn, want ze klit behoorlijk. Dus ik moet regelmatig de boel achter de kaartjes uit de knoop halen, ondanks de draairingetjes. Maar dat mag de pret niet drukken. Het is heel leuk om te zien hoe je door het draaien van de kaartjes patronen kunt maken. Op dit moment heb ik alleen nog maar strepen, maar de volgende keer hoop ik in ditzelfde weefsel ook blokken, visgraatjes en ruitjes te maken.


Tablet weaving
Of all the things I was given last week, I found the weaving cards the most intriguing. So they had to be tried. I’m not yet sure how they work, but they do work! I pulled some knitting yarn from my stash, through the 4 holes of the 24 cards I pulled two red threads and two green threads (1 thread per hole), and I started weaving and turning.

The first bit I had woven was a mess. The tension wasn’t equal on all threads, half of the treads were still slack, while the rest was pulled tight. So I undid that bit, and I restrung the whole lot. Weaving went a bit better after that, and I now have woven a small band. The yarn I used turned out not to be too well suited for the job, because they cling together a lot. So I regularly need to untwist the threads behind the cards, regardless the twist thingies at the end, but never mind. It’s fun to see how you can make patterns by turning the cards. At the moment I only have stripes, but next time I hope to also have blocks, chevrons and diamonds in this same band.

Around the world in 80 stitches, deel 1

Toen ik een paar maanden geleden mijn Castles in the Air af had, had ik zoiets van even geen SALs meer. Maar na een paar maanden begon het toch weer te kriebelen en begon ik toch nieuwschierig te worden wat de volgende SAL van Papillon Creations zou zijn. En toen een paar weken geleden het bericht binnen kwam dat Yvonne weer een SAL ging starten heb ik jullie al verteld hoe leuk het me leek om weer mee te doen.

De kleuren die ik uitgekozen heb zijn mooi en passen allemaal redelijk bij elkaar (vind ik). Het uitzoeken van de kleuren is nog best lastig. De drie groene kleuren waren snel gekozen, maar toen de 8 bloemkleuren. Dan zit je daar met 5 dozen vol met allemaal verschillende kleurtjes, de een nog mooier dan de ander. Gelukkig stond in de beschrijving van het project dat er ook af en toe plaats is om Perle garens te gebruiken. Dus toen mijn doos met perles er maar bij gehaald. Daar haalde ik 4 kleuren uit die ik in zowel #8 als #12 had, dus dat waren mijn eerste 4 kleuren. En daar heb ik op goed geluk nog 4 kleuren bijgezocht. Ik moest alleen mijn zacht geel vervangen, want dat viel volledig weg tegen de stof.

Gelukkig heb ik met CITA ervaren dat welke kleuren je ook kiest, het eindresultaat heel fraai is. En ik heb me niet vergist! Ik ben vorige week meteen met deel 1 begonnen, en het voelde meteen goed. De steekjes zijn leuk om te doen, en het geheel is nu al mooi. Ik had een beetje mijn twijfels of ik de steekjes met 1 of met 2 draadjes moest doen, omdat ik op 36 count edinburgh linnen werk, maar ik heb het toch volgens de beschijving met 2 draadjes gedaan.

When I finished my Castles in the Air a few months ago, I thought I wouldn't be doing another SAL for a while. But after a few months, it started to itch and I was getting curious what the next SAL from Papillon Creations would be. And when a couple of weeks ago news reached me that Yvonne was starting another SAL, I already told you what fun it would be to participate.

The colors I have chosen are nice and they combine reasonably well with each other (I think). Picking the colors is rather tricky. The three greens were quickly found, but then the 8 flower colors. So you sit there with 5 boxes filled with all different colors, each one prettier than the previous. Luckily the description said that the project could also occasionaly use some perle threads, so out came my box of perles. From that I took 4 colors of which I had both #8 and #12 threads. So that were the first 4 colors chosen. And the other 4 I picked to go with that. I only had to replace the soft yellow I had picked, because that totally disappeared against my fabric.

Fortunately I discovered with CITA that whichever colors you choose, the end result is almost always really nice. And I was right! I started part 1 last week, and it immediately felt right. The stitches are fun to do, and the colors combine remarkably well. The only doubt I had was whether to do the stitches with 1 or 2 threads, because I was working on 36 count edinburgh linnen, but I decided to go for the prescribed 2 threads.

Kijk eens wat ik gekregen heb?

Allemaal oude handwerk materialen! Ik ben knettergek, ik weet het, maar hier wordt ik gelukkig van. Ik kan hier uren aan zitten frunniken, met een hoofd dat langzaam volloopt met ideetjes. Er zit van alles tussen, van half afgemaakte borduurwerkjes (een prachtige Roodkapje), tot nieuwe stramien en garens, materialen om zijdebloemen te maken en materialen om rieten mandjes mee te maken, weef materialen en zelfs een spintol met een beetje wol.

Er zitten dingen bij die al een tijdje op mijn lijstje stonden van die wil ik ooit eens hebben (stramien, weefkaarten, spintol), dingen die me heel leuk lijken om gewoon eens een keer te proberen (bloemen maken, manden vlechten) en dingen waar ik geen idee van heb waar ze voor bedoeld zijn maar waar ik een hoop plezier aan het onderzoeken daarvan zal beleven.

Dus als ik de komende dagen niets van me laat horen, dan weet je dat ik zit te genieten.

This makes me happy
Look and see what I was given? A whole bunch of old craft materials! I’m nuts, I know, but this makes me happy. I can sit for hours playing with these things, slowly filling up my head with all sorts of ideas. There’s all sorts of stuff, from half finished embroideries (a lovely little Red Ridinghood), to new canvas and threads, silk flower materials and materials for making baskets, weaving materials and even a spinning toll with a bit of wool.

There’s materials that I had on my list-of-things-to-buy-someday (canvas, weave cards, spinning toll), things that I would like to try someday (making flowers and baskets) and things I have no idea what they are supposed to be for but I’m sure I’ll be having a lot of fun finding out.

So if you don’t hear from me in the next couple of days, you know I’m enjoying myself.
