(Bijna) geen steekje gezet

Afgelopen twee weekenden zijn we naar de camping geweest.

Daar ben ik bezig met Patchwork van Jan Houtman, waarbij ik een deel van de patroontjes met Caron Waterlillies borduur, heerlijk zacht en soepel om mee te werken. Daar had ik al weken naar uit zitten kijken. Hier is een foto van hoe ver ik was. Maar….

Ik had het eerste weekend ook Unseen Academicals (Academische Boys is de Nederlandse titel) van Terry Pratchett mee, en ik was inmiddels al zo door het verhaal gegrepen, dat ik het boek moeilijk weer neer kon leggen. Ik heb dus toen geen steekje geborduurd. Dit weekend had ik Making Money (Geld moet wapperen) mee. Net zo leuk als Unseen Academicals, ik ben gek op de humor van Pratchett, de woordspelingen waar die man mee komt, heerlijk! Maar funest voor mijn borduurtempo. Hier thuis ook, ik ben twee weken bezig geweest met dit ene patroontje van mijn Castles in the Air!

Over een paar weken gaan we weer naar de camping, maar ik heb me wel voorgenomen om geen Pratchett mee te nemen!

(Almost) no stitches made

The last two weekends we went to the camping. There I’m working on Patchwork by Jan Houtman, where I’m working some of the patterns with Caron Waterlillies, wonderfully soft and smooth to work with. I’d been looking forward to working on it for weeks. Here’s a picture of how far I was. But…

I had also taken Unseen Academicals with me the first weekend, and the second one I took Making Money with me. Both written by Terry Pratchett (I just love his sense of humor, the way he can play with words is just brilliant at times) and with both books I had reached the state that it was hard to put them down. Clearly Pratchett is killing my stitching speed. It’s the same here at home, I’ve worked two whole weeks on this one small pattern of my Castles in the Air!

In a couple of weeks we’re again going to the camping, but I promised myself not to bring any Pratchett!

Ik zeg toch...

Nu gaat het hard. Ik heb de eerste drie midden motieven van mijn Castles in the Air af! De eerste is het bloemen motief van deel 20, de tweede is het prieeltje van deel 19, en nu vers van de naald het bloemen motief van deel 17.

Ik wou dat ik hetzelfde kon zeggen over mijn tuin, maar loop elke keer tegen de beperkingen van slechts 1 groene container aan. Eigen schuld, had ik van de winter maar moeten beginnen met het afvoeren van het vuil.

I did say….
Now it’s going quickly. I finished the first three motifs of my Castles in the Air! The first is the flower motif of part 20, the second is the gazebo from part 19, and hot off the needle the flower motif of part 17.

I wish I could say the same for my garden, but I constantly hit the restrictions of just having 1 green garbage bin. Admittedly, it’s my own fault, I should have started disposing of the rubbish during the winter.

Mijn camera is binnen!

Yes! Ik heb weer een fototoestel. Het is een lief klein dingetje, maar hij maakt geweldige close-ups! Kijk bijvoorbeeld eens naar dit spinnetje, het is duidelijk te zien dat de draai behoorlijk uit de draad is. En deze foto is even snel genomen, geen speciale set-up of belichting, gewoon klik-klak-klaar.

Ik heb trouwens ook eindelijk mijn hekwerk van Castles in the Air af (wat een ellende al dat gouddraad), maar nou gaat het hard. Zondag was ik begonnen en had ik deel 12 ook af. En ik weet inmiddels wat ik met de 6 midden elementen ga doen: 4 van de fantasie figuren, maar 1 op een andere plaats en 1 op een andere plaats en gespiegeld (als het lukt). En de twee bloem motieven van de delen van de fantasie figuren die ik niet borduur. Dus van elk oorspronkelijke deel komt er een figuur of motief in mijn Castles in the Air. Hier een foto van het geheel, en een mooi detail van deel 12.

My camera arrived!
Yes! I’ve got myself a new photo camera! It’s a sweet little thingy, but she makes gorgeous close-ups! Look for instance at this lace spider, it is clearly visible that the thread has lost it’s twist somewhat. And this is just a quick snap shot, no special set-up or lighting, just click-clack and ready.

By the way, I’ve also finally finished the gates of my Castles in the Air (terrible to work with, gold thread), but now we’re moving ahead again. Sunday I started and finished part 12. And I now know what I want to do with the 6 middle elements: I’ll make 4 of the fantasy figures, but 1 on a different spot and 1 on a different spot and mirrored (or that’s what I’m going to try, anyway). And the two remaining places will be filled with the flower motives of the parts from the fantasy figures I’m not going to stitch. So from each original part I will stitch either a fantasie or a flower motive into my Castles in the Air. Here’s a picture of the whole thing so far, and a pretty detail of part 12.

Veel te vertellen

Ik ben lekker opgeschoten met mijn cottage, niet helemaal af, maar ik wilde ook nog deze boekenlegger afmaken voor ik gisteren aan mijn workshop begon. Yep, ik had gisteren een workshop! Het was al jaren een droom van me om cursussen te volgen, maar het kwam er steeds niet van.

Nou hadden ze bij Needles4All afgelopen november een cursus Perzisch Ajour gepland. Dat is een techniek die ik nog niet geprobeerd heb, maar wel heel graag wil doen. En ik had nog een snipperdag over, dus toen heb ik de stoute schoenen aangetrokken en me opgegeven. Helaas gooide in november de vroege sneeuw roet in het eten, dus toen werd het uitgesteld tot december, maar ook toen kon het niet doorgaan. Maar, drie keer is scheepsrecht, en gisteren was het dan toch eindelijk tijd voor mij om naar Amsterdam Noord te gaan.

Ik had geen idee wat ik precies kon verwachten, maar ik had er wel heel veel zin in. De gastvrouw, Ineke Siewertsen, had ik via de mail al een beetje leren kennen, en zij mij kennelijk ook want ze herkende me bij binnenkomst meteen. De andere cursisten, en de docente kende ik geen van allen, maar iedereen was enthousiast aan het praten over en bezig met handwerken. Dat schepte eigenlijk meteen een band en de rest van de dag werd er dus tijdens het oefenen echt over van alles en nog wat gebabbeld. De cursus zelf was leuk, gevarieerd, en zeer goed verzorgd. De docente, Tammy van der Stelt, wist duidelijk waar ze het over had en bracht het ook erg leuk. Ik ga dus zeker nog vaker een cursus volgen!

Lots to tell!
I did a lot on my cottage, didn’t finish it, but I also wanted to finish this bookmark before I started my workshop. Yep, I had a workshop yesterday! For years it has been a dream of mine to follow a few courses, but I never got round to it.

But last November Needles4All had planned a workshop Pulled Thread. That’s a technique I haven’t tried yet, but would love to do someday. And I still had a holiday left, so I decided to go for it and I registered. Unfortunately the early snowfall in November meant that the workshop was postponed to December, but it also couldn’t take place in December. But, finally, yesterday I could travel to Amsterdam Noord.

I didn’t have a clue what to expect, but I was very enthusiastic, open minded and ready for new experiences. I’d gotten to know the hostess, Ineke Siewertsen, a little bit via the mail, and she obviously had gotten to know me, because she recognized me immediately. The other students and the teacher I didn’t know, but when I arrived everyone was enthusiastically talking about and busy with stitching. That automatically created a bond, and the rest of the day, we talked about virtually everything while practicing. The workshop itself was fun, with a variety of challenges and well prepared. The teacher, Tammy van der Stelt, was clearly knowledgeable and she also taught in a fun way. I’ll definitely sign up for another workshop again!

Helaas, mijn camera is officieel dood verklaard. Reparatie kost meer dan een nieuwe die ook nog eens beter is. Dus nu ben ik zoekende naar een nieuwe camera. Maar ondertussen heb ik de camera van mijn Paps ingepikt (ssst, niet verder vertellen), en heb ik eindelijk foto’s kunnen maken waarop het kant zichtbaar is! Dus hier mijn laatste twee werkjes. Het eerste is een Russisch kantje dat ik gevonden heb in een heel oud tijdschrift "Handleiding voor Vrouwelijke handwerken", de pdf daarvan kun je hier vinden. Ik moest er duidelijk weer inkomen, want de eerste scherpe hoek is dus niet echt om over naar huis te schrijven, maar verder vind ik hem wel aardig gelukt. Het is gemaakt met Perle 8 van DMC.

Het tweede is mijn eerste poging tot het maken van Honiton. Dit is het eerste oefenstukje uit Elsie Luxton's The Technique of Honiton Lace, gemaakt met Egyptisch katoen dikte 120. Ik heb (nog) geen Honiton klosjes, dus hier en daar zat ik wat moeilijk te doen met bekraalde midland klosjes, maar het was heel leuk om te doen. Helaas is mijn draad gebroken bij de randslag van het linnenslag blaadje (vandaar de onderbreking in de rand), maar verder ben ik best trots op het resultaat. De volgende oefening (een eenvoudige bloem) ga ik proberen met on-bekraalde midland klosjes en met Egyptisch katoen 180. Dat zal waarschijnlijk wel meer dan 1 draadbreuk opleveren, denk ik.

Finally some Lace!
Alas, my camera has officially been declared dead. To fix it would cost more that buying a new one, with better capabilities. So now I’m looking for a new camera. But meanwhile I’ve nicked my Dads camera (hush, don’t tell anyone), and I’ve finally been able to make some pictures where the lace is actually visible. So here are my latest two bits of work. The first is a Russian lace that I found in a very old magazine called "Handleiding voor Vrouwelijke handwerken", you can find the pdf of it here. I really had to get back into it, because the first sharp corner is not something to be proud of, but apart from that, I think it’s okay. I made it with DMC Perle 8.

The second is my first attempt to making Honiton lace. This is the first exercise from Elsie Luxton's The Technique of Honiton Lace, which I made with Egyptian cotton no 120. I haven’t (yet) got any Honiton bobbins, so occasionally I was fiddling around with beaded midland bobbins, but it was fun to make. Unfortunately, my thread broke while making an edge stitch in the first leave (hence the gap in the edge), but apart from that, I think I can be proud of what I made. I’m going to attempt the next exercise (a simple flower) with unspangled midland bobbins and Egyptian cotton no 180. That will probably result in more than 1 breaking thread, I think.

Klein Foutje

Na alle confetti-steekjes van de afgelopen periode in Stroke of Midnight, wilde ik met wat simpelers verder. Daarom had ik besloten om de cottage van Twilight Bridge aan te pakken. Dus zondag middag even vanaf de brug tellen naar een herkenbaar punt van de cottage, en daarna lekker verder gegaan. Vandaag zat ik me net te bedenken dat het wel te hopen was dat ik goed geteld heb en prompt kwam ik er achter dat ik een foutje gemaakt heb met tellen. Nee, niet in de afstand van de brug naar het herkenbare punt, maar juist daarna. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat op 6 steken na alles 1 steek te laag zit!

Eerste reactie: uithalen dat huis! Gelijk gevolgd met: het is een kit, dan kom ik straks garens te kort! Dus heb ik besloten om gewoon door te gaan met de cottage, en dan onder de cottage in de begroeiing het verschil weg te werken. En dan zal ik de bovenste regel lucht boven de brug achterwege laten. Dat krijg je ervan als je denkt dat iets een eitje is.

Small Error
After spending my time on all those confetti-stitches in Stroke of Midnight, I wanted to work on something a lot simpler. That’s why I decided to tackle the cottage in Twilight Bridge. So Sunday afternoon I counted from the bridge to a recognizable point in the cottage, and away I went. Today, I was just thinking I hope I counted correctly, and naturally I discovered that I did make a mistake. No, not while counting the distance between the bridge and the recognizable stitch, but directly after that. With the result that everything is 1 stitch too low, except for the first 6 stitches!

First impulse: rip it all out! Directly followed by: it’s a kit, I’ll run out of threads! So I decided to just keep going with the cottage, and then loose a stitch underneath the cottage in the foliage. And then I will have to not stitch the top row of stitches in the sky above the bridge. That’s what you get for thinking something is a piece of cake.

Toch een paar fotootjes

Mijn camera werkt helaas nog steeds niet, maar mijn zoon had een mobieltje voor zijn verjaardag gekregen. En wel eentje met camera! Okay, het ding kan geen detail foto's maken, dus plaatjes van mijn kantwerkjes hou je nog tegoed. Maar een foto van mijn Stroke of Midnight lukt wel met dit toestel, en hier kun je zien waar ik de laatste keer gebleven was.

Ik heb trouwens ook een heel lief biscornuutje gemaakt voor een competitie van de Victoria Sampler Yahoo groep. Helaas, ook hier geen detail foto's, dus ik kan niet laten zien dat er verschillende steekjes zijn gebruikt. Maar wel kun je hier de verschillende kleurtjes goed zien.

Elke kant heeft zijn eigen DMC variations kleurtje (dat zijn trouwens heel mooie kleurtjes)

A few pictures
My own camera is still not working, but my son had received a mobile phone for his birthday. And he got one with a camera! So the thing doesn't do close-up pictures, so showing you my lace still has to wait, but it can handle an update on my Stroke of Midnight, and here you can find where I ended last time.

By the way, I also made a terribly sweet little biscornu for a competition on the Victoria Sampler Yahoo group. Regrettably, also on this no close-up of all the different stitches used, but you can see the different colors used. Both sides have their own DMC variations color (there's some lovely colors in that range, beside these two).
