Confetti of Hardanger

Confetti of Hardanger
Here’s the promised update on Confetti of Hardanger. Part two added a border of pulled holes around the squares. The three large blocks were edged with faggot stitch, and the other blocks with double backstitch. This double backstitch is best stitched from the back of the project, so you can see where the threads go (they shouldn’t go straight across the holes you just created). Both of these stitches are not difficult, but because of the force needed to pull the holes they are tiring for the hands.

Speaking about pulled, Kathrin of Gitta’s Designs has started an pulled thread SAL (here is the start) on her blog. There are two versions you can make: a 15-sided biscornu, or a sampler. If you’d like to make a 15-sided biscornu, but you don’t fancy pulled work, she also had a nice x-stitch version in 2011 (starting here). I think I’ll incorporate the pulled thread sampler in my Prutsrol, but I don’t know yet how.

By the way, a correction to my message on the Stekenkwekerij in the latest issue of Handwerken zonder Grenzen: only 5 rectangles are given. According to the magazine, the other rectangles would be available on the website, but after e-mailing the website this turned out to be incorrect in the magazine. The first 5 rectangles are given as an example how to set up your own Stekenkwekerij. Personally I'm a bit disappointed that they will not put the additional rectangles on the website after all.

1 SAL bijgewerkt en 1 SAL begonnen.

AW80 deel 4
Dit weekend was zeer productief. Eerst heb ik gewerkt aan Around the World in 80 stitches.

1 SAL updated and 1 SAL started.
floss butterfly left, Perle butterfly right
This was a very productive weekend. First I worked on Around the World in 80 stitches. Just before my holiday part 4 was release and part 5 is probably going to be released somewhere next week, so it was about time I did something about it. This time I have used almost always Perle threads, where I had them. Only with the Hungarian Diamond did I not use the dark red Perle, because that was combined with a color I didn't have a Perle for, and I also stitched the cross stitches with ordinary floss.
The Diagonal Hungarian Butterflies do show nicely the difference between ordinary floss and Perle. The Perle is much more granular and personally I think the floss butterfly is nicer. On the other hand, the Perle works extremely well with the Romanian stitches.

A confetti of Hardanger

And once I finished part 4 I went straight on and started Confetti of Hardanger, a new SAL by Abi Gurden on TheStitchSpecialists, which is suitable for both beginners as more advanced stitchers of Hardanger embroidery. But more on this another time.

Mission accomplished

"My family is a sheltering tree
Strong branches to comfort me
There's no place that I'd rather be
Than with my loving family"

Last Christmas, when I was searching for "Silk Wysteria" on the web-site from Victoria's Sampler, I couldn't resist snooping around. At some point I stumbled on the Heirloom Family Sampler. When I read the text on it, I was hooked: I just had to stitch this for Mum and Dad! And all and everything had to be put on hold for it. Two and a half weeks ago the pattern and threads arrived, and 15 days later it was finished. Today I delivered it to Mum and Dad, they went all quiet. I only had one request: when they didn't want it anymore, I want it back. Their answer: that only happens when we're dead! Mission accomplished, I'd say.

Bonus?

Bonus?
I started this blog mainly as a means to share my projects with anyone interested. I am a member of a few Yahoo groups where I can show my projects. But these groups appear to me to have very limited cross-overs, I mean, I’m not talking about my speciality stitches on the Cross Stitch groups, and at the groups for speciality stitches I don’t talk about “simple” things like motives for cards. But there might be people among the members of the cross stitch groups who’d like to do speciality stitches, but are afraid to try.

And on the stitching groups I’m not talking about my doll house (with maybe the exception of the miniature embroideries). But it is quite possible there are stitchers who might be dreaming about having a doll house, but who haven’t got a clue how to begin. Or maybe there are miniaturists who also like to embroider, but who don’t know where to get all those gorgeous designs from. Hopefully, with this blog I can persuade these people to try something new. This is something I probably will never know, but I like just being able to give this opportunity.

But there’s one bonus I didn’t count on getting. Let me explain. For years, we’ve been trying to get my mother to use a computer, but she has constantly managed to steer clear of this (why do I need to, I don’t understand, I’m afraid to damage something… ). Even the seduction of free patterns didn’t convince her. But when I showed her my blog some time ago, I didn’t expect this to draw her into the 21 century. But it did! Mum is now turning on the laptop herself and goes on internet to see if there’s any more news on my blog. The disadvantage is of course that from now on I have to take care when showing projects that they are not meant as a surprise for her when finished.

So I hope you as my reader will forgive me when I occasionally post a rather cryptic report on a lovely sunday stitching. Like when I've been busy creating a whole lot of leaves, and 9 mini-birds that each can hide underneath a coin.

Toplayer of Bellpull finished!
The toplayer of my Linnen Band Bell Pull is finished! For a moment it looked like it went wrong with the "lacy edge"(it's the last straw that breaks the camel's back). I had cut a few threads that shouldn't have been cut yet at that point, but even so, I managed to create a good tip. Now I have to wait for my order from Nordic Needle to arrive, because that also has the fabric and threads for the bottomlayer.

Linnen Band Bell Pull bijna klaar!

Linnen Band Bell Pull nearing completion!

I went to bed rather late last night. I really didn’t intent to, and I didn’t feel much like doing anything. I just wanted to watch television for an hour or so, and then turn in early. But while the boys were still up and watching their programs, I pulled out my “Linnen Band Bell Pull” by Emie Bishop, so I could do a few stitches. But naturally, it didn’t stay with a few stitches.

Normally my projects go through a few phases:
1. The Startup phase, where the pattern has been selected, and the materials are collected.
2. The First Stitch phase, where all materials are complete, and an enthusiastic start is made.
3. After a while, we reach the Accustomed phase, where all the ins and outs of the project are known, and the attention regresses. This phase often ends in the
4. (temporary) UFO phase, where the project is put aside in favor of another project. But with a little bit of luck we reach the
5. Pick-up phase, where we have do some investigation to find out where we left the project. The UFO and Pick-up phase can occur several times, but during each pick-up phase a few stitches will be added to the project. So eventually we (hopefully) reach the
6. Final phase, where the completion of the project is drawing near, and the excitement of a little finishing party is gaining momentum. It becomes more and more difficult to put the project aside. NB: this phase has a high risk of neglect of housework and family members. This phase will end in
7. A HAPPY DANCE!!!!

This bell pull project is a little bit the odd one out. I found the pattern in 2005 on a fair, and I fell in love with it immediately. But oh, all those complicated stitches! This was way too difficult for someone who hadn’t done anything else but cross stitch and 1 Hardanger project, but someday I would give it a go. So, without rushing things, I began the Start Up phase. For this project, the pattern called for some threads from Needle Necessities. It took a while for me to discover that this brand no longer exists, but that the colors could be replaced with Threadworks colors (click here for a conversion table). But eventually I had all materials needed for this project.

Meanwhile, I had already started the Castles in the Air SAL, and that had taught me that the speciality stitches look far more complex than they actually are, just as long as you pay attention. So after the summer holidays I took the plunge, and I started trying one row after another. And that’s what I’m still doing! Because each row is done with new stitches, I still haven’t reached the Accustomed phase, but I did move straight into the Final phase.

Now I have finished 81 of the 88 rows, so it is high time for some pictures. (Click on pictures for larger image)
