What a mess!
Because of working way too much to try and keep up with all those fun stitching projects, I’ve had to stop stitching for a few months now. My shoulder didn’t want to cooperate. My Mum once had a frozen shoulder, so when I noticed that just stopping with stitching wasn’t improving my arm, I quickly went to my GP. And now I have fysio and am I’m still not allowed to stitch.

So, the last few months I mainly spend reading, but when I started on the Odyssee by Homer, I started to wonder what I was doing. So this weekend, I cautiously picked up my bobbin lace. While doing that, my hands/arms don’t move above my shoulder, so that’s allowed according to the fysio.

I immediately started with the most difficult bit, the corner. And I thought, that this was the fourth corner, so I started planning my next lace project. Will it be a Lappet, or maybe another Honiton excersize? But alas, this was only the third corner of my hanky edge, so no new projects for a while yet. But it did feel good to do something with threads again!

Aankopen

Purchases
Great, going to a fair, but naturally it will cause problems. I’ve had it before that I had seen something, and then when later I want to buy it, I can’t. So when I go to a fair, I not only buy the things I need, but also stuff for “later”. The various pieces of fabric that I bought, I bought to add to my stash, and the threads are meant for a blackwork project I want to start after my trip to Marken, so they are not a problem.

But then you find this lovely darning pattern, and a sampler from Rosewood Manor, Karen Kublas “Language of the Flowers”. And what to think of this French book on open seams. All of these I just had to buy. And now they’re loudly calling “Start me!” and that when there’s still so much screaming “Finish me!”. The noise is driving me crazy! So I’ll quickly continue with my “utterwerk”.

Facebook

Facebook
Facebook is a place on internet where everyone plays games and talks chirpily about everything and nothing, without actually saying very much. And if you must believe the media, it’s also dangerous: it’s addictive; girls become depressed because of it; it incites to murder and half the country goes ballistic because a birthday girl makes one tiny mistake. So no place for a serious person who only talks when she has something to say, like me.

But then, more and more people I want to listen and talk to hide behind that horrible login screen of Facebook. So, since I want to keep in touch, I’ve recently created a facebook account.

Huidige utter randje
Current utter border
Don’t scratch!
I’m starting to itch again. I’ve been concentrating on 1 project for too long now. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my Marken embroidery and the course is getting more and more interesting. But I like variety. I had hoped that the Borders a Week project would give enough diversity, but the less than two hours work I spend last Saturday to get these borders stitched are not nearly enough.
Overzicht van mijn lap
Overview of my project

Early April we have a get together of course participants (on Marken! I’m really looking forward to it!), and I want to show off my project a little bit. Naturally, I can already do just that, but I haven’t even started on Sneewerk! So I’m hoping this is enough of an incentive to not start anything new. But this weekend is the embroidery fair in Zwolle and nothing is going to stop me buying my materials in advance!

Ik ben helemaal niet ongeduldig...

Het begin van het Spaanse deel

I’m totally not impatient…
I’ve wanted a Millenium Frame from NeedleNeeds  for over 2 years now, but I didn’t have the money. Now, unexpectedly, I received a nice bonus from my work at the same time I made my final payment on a loan. So then I didn’t just buy the frame, but also the standard. It has been some 3 weeks since I’ve placed my order, so I’m hoping to receive these soon.  I’m really looking forward to that.

Het totale plaatje tot nu toe
The total picture so far
I’ve actually got quite a lot to look forward to. At the beginning of next month, my Mother and I will go to Roden to visit the Handwerk Boetiek. My Mum asked me to make a wishlist for my birthday and I suggested to go and have a look there (I had already inspected the website and therefore already knew that it was highly likely that I would end up spending lots of money). On top of that I heard the news that Abi Gurden is soon starting another SAL in the shape of a tree. I want to combine that tree with her previous Tree of Stitches. So I’ll definitely be looking at fabrics and threads for this.

But before I can start on that SAL, I should really need to finish at least 1 project. So I’ll put my Historic Countries Sampler aside for now (no matter how hard I try, I won’t be able to finish that in a month) and I’ll quickly have a look to see which UFO needs the least amount of work.

Plannen voor 2013

Patchwork

Stroke of Midnight

Gyr Falcon

Plans for 2013
I don't do New Year's resolutions, but at the start of every year I imagine what I want to get done that year. Last year I hoped to finish a number of large UFO's. Regrettably the results are a bit disappointing. I only managed to finish Patchwork. But...

Silk Wysteria
All UFO's have moved on quite a bit and all can be considered WIP's again. So I will continue trying to finish old projects. The projects I aim to finish this year are Stroke of Midnight, Gyr Falcon and Silk Wysteria. And I also want to update my Around the World in 80 stitches SAL and then try and keep up with it.

Around the world in 80 stitches
With my lace making I want to finish my current hanky edge, and I want to continue with the hanky edge on my other pillow. Only after I've finished these two I want to start something different, but I have no idea if I can manage that this year.

My plans are rather ambitious when it comes to knitting. I would very much like to make the original "Crown Prince shawl" as it is presented in the book "The Haapsalu Shawl"by Siiri Reiman and Aime Edasi. And after that maybe the Great Garbo shawl from the same book. But first I will finish the carnaval shawl I'm knitting for my eldest. And beside all that, I'm also planning to start a stitch roll, but I'm still working on the how and what.

Makkelijk?!?

De moeilijkste
The hardest

The prettiest of these three

Easy?!?
De makkelijkste
The easiest
Did I say last time that the patterns were easy to knit? Well, these last three were quite a struggle! There’s quite a bit of movement in them, and yarn overs in places you don’t expect, which meant that every row had to be counted and recounted. But the results are accordingly, really pretty. And I can’t really complain, I’ve only worked on this for two weeks, and I’m already more than halfway. It’s a bit of a pity that it looks like two skeins of Filigram won’t be enough for this shawl. Lucky for me I’ve got myself a spare skein, so I won’t run out.

Another difficulty, which wool for which pattern?

And meanwhile I’ve been searching for the next pattern to knit. Will it be Laminaria, Monica’s shawl or will I stick with Haruni (click on the names for photo's and details)? I even have some lovely wools in my stash, and a load of beads to boot, but I need to finish this one first!

woensdag 18 april 2012

Hier word ik vrolijk van

Kijk eens wat ik gekregen heb?
Allemaal oude handwerk materialen!

This makes me happy
Look and see what I was given? A whole bunch of old craft materials! I’m nuts, I know, but this makes me happy. I can sit for hours playing with these things, slowly filling up my head with all sorts of ideas. There’s all sorts of stuff, from half finished embroideries (a lovely little Red Ridinghood), to new canvas and threads, silk flower materials and materials for making baskets, weaving materials and even a spinning toll with a bit of wool.

There’s materials that I had on my list-of-things-to-buy-someday (canvas, weave cards, spinning toll), things that I would like to try someday (making flowers and baskets) and things I have no idea what they are supposed to be for but I’m sure I’ll be having a lot of fun finding out.

So if you don’t hear from me in the next couple of days, you know I’m enjoying myself.

zondag 1 april 2012

Around the world in 80 stitches gaat half april van start.

It’s driving me mad!
A head full of ideas and no time to start on them. And to boot, I can’t show you what I’ve been working on in stead either, because then it wouldn’t be a surprise for Teresa. Because I just finished a scissor case for an exchange on TheStitchSpecialists. Naturally I did take a few pictures, and I’ll show them to you once Teresa has received the scissor case.

By the way, Papillon Creations is starting another Mystery Sal! Around the world in 80 stitches will start mid April. It's the same concept as Castles in the Air, you decide if you want to do mainly cross stitch with just the odd simple stitch, or that you go for all 80 stitches. And you can choose your own colors! The patterns come complete with clear stitch diagrams so even beginners can make the stitches. So if you've been thinking "those speciality stitches, I'd like to give them a try", here's your chance! Quickly go to the newsletter corner on Papillon Creations and register.

I kinda agreed with myself that I had to finish at least one of my UFOs before starting another big project, but that went straight out of the window when I read about this SAL. I have my fabric and threads all ready to go. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding I won't be using any speciality threads or fabric, just ordinary stuff from my stash. But I'm absolutely sure it's going to be gorgeous againb.

And now I can finally work on these ideas. Soon I’ll let you know what I'm upto now.

Dragons Galore

This weekend I've been playing around with those freebie dragons. And I'm just missing 1 small one to go on the red X. It only has to be a small one, about 30 by 30 stitches in total, but it has to be free and legally available through the internet. I'll just keep on looking.

Snuffelcursus deel 2

Snuffelcursus part 2
And then it was day 2, and then the real fun began. You already knew everyone a little, so less awkward, and everyone had worked really hard on their homework. So even before Klaartje (our wonderful hostess) had supplied everyone with coffee, all the fabrics were displayed on the centre table with everyone oo-ing and ah-ing around it. Naturally, the first hour was spend on admiring of and listening to the stories behind each embroidery. The rest of the morning was passed away while practicing a few different countable stitches. This turned out to be a good way for everyone to calm down, so we could concentrate on Blackwork after having eaten our soup.

This time our homework consisted of finishing/adding stitches to our square of stitch practice; finding and stitching a small pattern a few times, each time with a different stitch; and a (practice) square with Blackwork. Unfortunately, my time was rather in short supply, so I didn’t do the small pattern square. I did work on the stitch-practice, and I finished my blackwork square, and I’m rather proud of it as well!

The blackwork square could be filled with several little squares, each with a different filling, or you could turn it into a real pattern, like I did. The butterfly was originally a tapelace pattern. I used the lines for the tape as division between the parts of the wings. And those parts I filled with different fillings, two of which have a form of shading. The Tulip I adapted from a Mary Hickmott pattern, published in a magazine called New Stitches.

Cycling to the office.
To help me loose weight, and to save on patrol (those prices are way too high!) I have planned to cycle to work more often. Since I have no lights on my bike, I’ll be limited to my “short” days for now (mo, tue, fri) and only when it doesn’t rain on the way in because I don’t want to sit wet at my desk all day. And for each time I take the bike in the months January, February and March, I’m allowed to buy one skein of silk for the “Historic countries Mystery sampler” from The gift of Stitching Magazine. I’m planning to make that one in the caravan, once I’ve finished Jan Houtmans Patchwork.

Counter is currently on: 2

SAL: Even more Whitework!
This week we had a visitor from abroad. A good friend came to stay for a few days. It was very nice to have him around again, but nothing much gets done of course. But I made up for that this weekend by working on part 9 of my Castles in the Air. It's great to work on something so lovely. I did make 1 decision though: no more DMC metallic threads for me. It is just to nerve racking for me.

I did see a lot of nice things pass through Yahoo. There was another finish of one of Gigi's letters. The A definitely moved up a bit on my wishlist! I also hadn't heard of Humbugs or Pendibule before (two different things!), but I will definitely try them on my Xmas ornaments.

Eternal Life
I’ve reached the conclusion that I need to live forever if I want to do all the plans that are playing through my head. Even if I would win the jackpot today, and live to be 187 years old, I’d still have not enough time. Thanks to the internet I am no longer dependent on the (usually) very limited assortment of the local needlework stores. This is great, naturally, but because of all of the information I get this way, my head is overflowing with ideas. And now I’m not just talking about the hundreds of ready made designs that I want to put on my to-do list. But I’m especially talking about the thousands of small patterns available on websites and blogs from all over the world. Especially the antique patterns inspire me to make my own samplers.

So let the finding of this blog to the idea to incorporate the Russian patterns into a band sampler in the colors of the Saint Basil’s Cathedral from the Red Square from Moscow. And from the same blog, I think the French patterns would do very well in “old” colors like Lavender, Olive green and Terra Cotta. And the many flower patterns on my aunts attic blog tempt me into stitching some of the prettiest together in 1 sampler, using various variegated silk threads.

Or what to think of the Stitch of the Month pages from the American Needlepoint Society? Here I have two different ideas. I either stitch the summary December projects on very fine gauche, or I make a sampler for each year, with the December projects as central focal point, and around that I’ll experiment with the various stitches. Or after seeing a pattern of a house in Hedebo technique, that picture evolves into three pictures: the original house, the same house in blackwork and again that self same house but this time in Ajour technique. And I can continue like this for hours!

But where do I find the time?

Meanwhile, I've finished my second christmas ornament. Well, one side of it, and it's bigger than I expected it to be! Pattern from "The Gift of Stitching" November 2008, with main threads two Dinky Dye silk colors.
