Mijn eerste echte patroontje

My first pattern
I’ve started enthousiastically on my Crown Prince shawl, but because of that I sort of forgot that I wanted to start a new pattern on my roll every weekend. So this weekend I quickly started on my first pattern.

This is the "Paw pattern 1" or in Estonian "Käpakiri 1" from the book The Haapsalu Shawl by Siiri Reimann and Aime Edasi. It is a simple pattern for starting lace knitters, it only contains the usual yarn overs and reductions. The pattern itself is a repeating part of 7 stitches per row, with 7 stitches divided over the start and finish of a row to neaten the edges. And because you only have to remember 7 stitches per row, it is a fairly quick knit.

Nieuw: Breirol

1 Kantsteek; 4 gerstekorrels; 42 patroon steken;4 gerstekorrels;1 Kantsteek

New: knitting sampler roll
This weekend I started a knitting sampler roll. In olden days these sampler rolls were knitted by school girls to learn the stitches. This old log on Berti’s blog can tell you more about it (sorry, it’s in Dutch). When I first learned about these knitting sampler rolls, it made me terribly happy. Finally an excuse to try out all those gorgeous patterns! Of course, I could turn each pattern into a beautiful scarf or stole, but that will consume a lot of wool (and time).

I’m definitely not sick and tired of knitting scarves yet, and I will definitely continue making more. But at the same time I will incorporate the patterns that I won’t be using for a stole into this role. I have not yet a clear idea what I will be knitting, and how long this roll will become (I might be fed up after three or four patterns), but I do have a few basic details.

The roll is 52 stitches wide and divided as follows:
1 Edge stitch; 4 Seed stitches; 42 pattern stitches; 4 Seed stitches; 1 Edge stitch.
Each pattern will be separated by 4 rows of Seed stitch.
When a pattern doesn’t quite fit within 42 stitches, but is 43 or 44 stitches, then I can steal one stitch from the seed stitches on either side of the pattern.
I’m using a thin 50% cotton – 50% acryl yarn (bought or given to me ages ago for the knitting machine).

My intention is to regularly report my progress here. When I do, I will mention where I got the pattern from, when possible with an internet link. I will not display or write out the patterns here to avoid copy write issues. I’m sure there will be enough patterns that are copy write free, but my knowledge on the subject is too limited to determine. However, for future generations I will record each pattern used in this notebook.

My first knitting pattern is a simple stockinette stitch. Later I will stitch my initials on this.
