Winterdip

Deel 9

Mijn Pa z'n initialen zitten in
de weg voor het huis!
Dan maar de kleinere letters
gebruiken

Part 9
Part 8 and 9
Just a quick note to show a few pictures. I finished part 8 and 9 of AW80, you see. The names of the stitches get prettier each time, what to think of Mossoul stitch, or Bokhara couching? But with the stitch diagrams from Papillon Creations stitching these stitches only a case of counting. And that is sometimes rather difficult. That's why a bit in part 9 is a stitch too high, but not so you'd notice.

Inhaal sessie

Part 6

Maltese Cross
Catch up session
The new SAL reminded me that I am also working on a different SAL, the one from Papillon Creations named Around the World in 80 Stitches (AW80 in short). And I’m well behind on that one. The last time I worked on it, I was busy with part 6 with the Greek cross, Rhodes and Cretan stitches.

Part 7 finished
There wasn’t much left to do, so then I quickly moved on to part 7. This was fun to do, the two-sided triangular Turkish stitch and the Lefkhara lace stitches were not that difficult, but the Maltese crosses were a bit of a challenge. I’m not very satisfied with the end result of two of them, I might redo them at some point. But first on with parts 8 and 9.

Geen fut

De 1000 meter (jongste in lange broek)
The 1000 meters (youngest in brown trousers)

Part 6 still not finished after a week

No energy
I have tried all week to update my Around the world in 80 stitches. Honesty requires me to admit that I didn’t spend all my time working on it. I also worked a bit on my lace and I regularly dwelled on the sofa watching TV. My eldest changed schools rather unexpectedly this week, and that requires a lot of energy for both him and me to adapt. Also this weekend, my youngest was participating in his first athletics club championship, and because it was a lot of fun seeing him interact and having fun with his friends, I stayed a lot longer to watch than I intended.
Jammer dat die lat los zat
A pity that bar was loose

Part six is not really that difficult, and I should have been able to do this in two evenings, but after a week this thing still isn’t finished. Last night I sat down behind my frame, and again I asked myself “Do I have to do this?”. And the answer was “No, I don’t”, after all, it is a hobby that should give you pleasure. So I put away AW80 and pulled out my Fairy Flower Garden Mandala (but more on this next time).

Deel 5 AW80

Deel 5

Part 5 AW80
This week I wanted to work on my SAL’s. I already had part 2 of Confetti of Hardanger, and part 3 is due at the end of this week (more on this next time) and part 5 of Around the World in 80 stitches was also released a while ago. So Sunday evening I pulled out AW80 and started stitching. This part wasn’t very difficult, so Tuesday night I could attach the beads (always my last step).

If you also would like to try different stitches but you think a large project like AW80 is a bridge too far, then maybe the Stekenkwekerij from the latest Handwerken Zonder Grenzen (issue 172) might be something for you. This is a stitching project that consists of a number of rectangles and each rectangle contains a number of different stitches. Handwerken Zonder Grenzen is giving 25 different rectangles, but it’s up to you how many rectangles you stitch.

AW80 so far

1 SAL bijgewerkt en 1 SAL begonnen.

AW80 deel 4
Dit weekend was zeer productief. Eerst heb ik gewerkt aan Around the World in 80 stitches.

1 SAL updated and 1 SAL started.
floss butterfly left, Perle butterfly right
This was a very productive weekend. First I worked on Around the World in 80 stitches. Just before my holiday part 4 was release and part 5 is probably going to be released somewhere next week, so it was about time I did something about it. This time I have used almost always Perle threads, where I had them. Only with the Hungarian Diamond did I not use the dark red Perle, because that was combined with a color I didn't have a Perle for, and I also stitched the cross stitches with ordinary floss.
The Diagonal Hungarian Butterflies do show nicely the difference between ordinary floss and Perle. The Perle is much more granular and personally I think the floss butterfly is nicer. On the other hand, the Perle works extremely well with the Romanian stitches.

A confetti of Hardanger

And once I finished part 4 I went straight on and started Confetti of Hardanger, a new SAL by Abi Gurden on TheStitchSpecialists, which is suitable for both beginners as more advanced stitchers of Hardanger embroidery. But more on this another time.

Wijze les

Pulled too hard on bottom pulled eyelet

Great lesson
I learned something last night: Pull holes first, then cut holes! I was working on part 3 of AW80 (Around the world in 80 stitches) and naturally I couldn't wait to start the fun bit, the cutwork. That succeeded very well, just like most of the stitches, until I reached the pulled eyelets. I pulled just a little too hard and the cut fabric thread were pulled from underneath the kloster block. I pulled a little less hard with the second cutwork area, and thankfully that went well. But next time I must remember to first finish all the other stitches before I start cutting.

By the way, I changed the pattern somewhat. Part three consists of two versions and I thought both versions were very nice. So I was still in doubt which one to do, when Lana mentioned that you can do half of one and half of the other version! A brilliant idea and I immediately went ahead with the Russian chain stitches. One third of those are done with one colour, the second third with another colour and the rest with metallic thread. So I took the first colour and stitched the stitches on all four petals.

And then I discovered that two pettals are stitched with different colours! Should I rip the stitches again? I decided to leave them, because that meant that I would have two colours left to change the whitework. After all I deliberately selected my colours because of which I had in my perle stash. So now I could work the whitework centre with perle 8 and 12 in DMC colour 814!

Around the world in 80 stitches deel 2

Tweede tulp

Around the world in 80 stitches part 2
As you can see, the second tulip went a lot quicker than the first. I started it yesterday, and it's already finished (and yes, I did sleep). But what do you expect, it's such a nice project to work on. And now I have to wait for part 3. I hate waiting.

Langzaam

Zoals deel twee van Around the world in 80 stitches.

Slowly
Real slowly I’m getting the energy to stitch back. The problems with my son haven’t been sorted yet (long story: he’s in his final year of primary school and doesn’t have a secondary school to go to), but there’s very little I can do about that right now. So I “just” have to let it not bother me. And the more I succeed in doing so, the better I can concentrate on my stitching. And I have to, because I have some gorgeous things to work on.

Like part two of Around the world in 80 stitches. I finished the first tulip, and since it has been a while since I’ve shown anything, I thought I wouldn’t wait for the second tulip to be finished and show you this one now.

Around the world in 80 stitches, deel 1

Around the world in 80 stitches, part 1.
When I finished my Castles in the Air a few months ago, I thought I wouldn't be doing another SAL for a while. But after a few months, it started to itch and I was getting curious what the next SAL from Papillon Creations would be. And when a couple of weeks ago news reached me that Yvonne was starting another SAL, I already told you what fun it would be to participate.

The colors I have chosen are nice and they combine reasonably well with each other (I think). Picking the colors is rather tricky. The three greens were quickly found, but then the 8 flower colors. So you sit there with 5 boxes filled with all different colors, each one prettier than the previous. Luckily the description said that the project could also occasionaly use some perle threads, so out came my box of perles. From that I took 4 colors of which I had both #8 and #12 threads. So that were the first 4 colors chosen. And the other 4 I picked to go with that. I only had to replace the soft yellow I had picked, because that totally disappeared against my fabric.

Fortunately I discovered with CITA that whichever colors you choose, the end result is almost always really nice. And I was right! I started part 1 last week, and it immediately felt right. The stitches are fun to do, and the colors combine remarkably well. The only doubt I had was whether to do the stitches with 1 or 2 threads, because I was working on 36 count edinburgh linnen, but I decided to go for the prescribed 2 threads.

zondag 1 april 2012

Around the world in 80 stitches gaat half april van start.

It’s driving me mad!
A head full of ideas and no time to start on them. And to boot, I can’t show you what I’ve been working on in stead either, because then it wouldn’t be a surprise for Teresa. Because I just finished a scissor case for an exchange on TheStitchSpecialists. Naturally I did take a few pictures, and I’ll show them to you once Teresa has received the scissor case.

By the way, Papillon Creations is starting another Mystery Sal! Around the world in 80 stitches will start mid April. It's the same concept as Castles in the Air, you decide if you want to do mainly cross stitch with just the odd simple stitch, or that you go for all 80 stitches. And you can choose your own colors! The patterns come complete with clear stitch diagrams so even beginners can make the stitches. So if you've been thinking "those speciality stitches, I'd like to give them a try", here's your chance! Quickly go to the newsletter corner on Papillon Creations and register.

I kinda agreed with myself that I had to finish at least one of my UFOs before starting another big project, but that went straight out of the window when I read about this SAL. I have my fabric and threads all ready to go. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding I won't be using any speciality threads or fabric, just ordinary stuff from my stash. But I'm absolutely sure it's going to be gorgeous againb.

And now I can finally work on these ideas. Soon I’ll let you know what I'm upto now.
