Kerstornamentje Maart

Christmas ornament March
A little bit later than normal, but here’s my Christmas ornament for March. And it’s a good thing I didn’t have time earlier, because I only know of these Pendibules since last Thursday. I think it turned out really well, and this thing is very simple to make. Just a square piece of fabric, which you fold diagonally in half and just like a biscornu you use overcast stitched through the backstitch border to sew it closed. Here you will find an explanation. In fact, the most difficult part is to find a pattern that fits the theme AND is placed in a corner AND that it can also be put upright on the corner. But I managed!

Eternal Life
I’ve reached the conclusion that I need to live forever if I want to do all the plans that are playing through my head. Even if I would win the jackpot today, and live to be 187 years old, I’d still have not enough time. Thanks to the internet I am no longer dependent on the (usually) very limited assortment of the local needlework stores. This is great, naturally, but because of all of the information I get this way, my head is overflowing with ideas. And now I’m not just talking about the hundreds of ready made designs that I want to put on my to-do list. But I’m especially talking about the thousands of small patterns available on websites and blogs from all over the world. Especially the antique patterns inspire me to make my own samplers.

So let the finding of this blog to the idea to incorporate the Russian patterns into a band sampler in the colors of the Saint Basil’s Cathedral from the Red Square from Moscow. And from the same blog, I think the French patterns would do very well in “old” colors like Lavender, Olive green and Terra Cotta. And the many flower patterns on my aunts attic blog tempt me into stitching some of the prettiest together in 1 sampler, using various variegated silk threads.

Or what to think of the Stitch of the Month pages from the American Needlepoint Society? Here I have two different ideas. I either stitch the summary December projects on very fine gauche, or I make a sampler for each year, with the December projects as central focal point, and around that I’ll experiment with the various stitches. Or after seeing a pattern of a house in Hedebo technique, that picture evolves into three pictures: the original house, the same house in blackwork and again that self same house but this time in Ajour technique. And I can continue like this for hours!

But where do I find the time?

Meanwhile, I've finished my second christmas ornament. Well, one side of it, and it's bigger than I expected it to be! Pattern from "The Gift of Stitching" November 2008, with main threads two Dinky Dye silk colors.

Kerstornamentje

Mijn eerste ornamentje is tevens mijn eerste biscornu geworden.

Christmas ornament.
Who is making Christmas ornaments in January? Just foolish me. A few years ago I always stitched Christmas cards, which I sent to everyone. At first these were simple cross stitch cards, that I could stitch in an evening. But after a while these cards got more and more complex and pretty, which made it more difficult for me to send them out (I don’t like saying goodbye to my work). So when I realized that most Christmas cards end up in the trash in January, I stopped making them. But the previous two months I have seen so many pretty, cute and beautiful Christmas ornaments through several Yahoo groups. And Christmas ornaments can be stored with all the other Xmas decorations, so I’ve decided that I’m going to try and make an ornament each month.

My first ornament is also my first biscornu. The pattern was taken from the 2009 December issue from Cross Stitch Collection (issue 178), and I’ve used Schrürer threads and Madeira metallic thread. I deliberately chose a reasonably simple pattern, since I didn’t know how complex the making of a biscornu would be. But that turned out to be not that difficult either. In the end, finding the right buttons for in the middle of the biscornu was the most difficult part of the whole ornament. I had found a few nice Christmas buttons through internet, but after receipt these turned out to bee too big, so I ended up using just ordinary buttons.
