Mijn Castles in the Air....

Is af!!!

My Castles in the Air….
Is Finished!!! And I just love it!!! This was my first SAL (Stitch Along), and a mystery SAL to boot. In 2009 I could buy the first part for 1 British pound. The 22 parts after that were free of charge. Back then, I didn’t know what it would look like. The only thing I knew was the size, that I could choose between a cross stitch and a speciality stitch version, and that only some of the colors were specified. I had to choose 3 greens and 5 flower colors myself.

You try and choose colors while you have no idea how they are going to be used. So I just pulled a few skeins from my stash, and I ordered a few Weeks Dye Works using the pictures from the ordering screen, just a few colors I liked. When the WDW skeins arrived, I had my doubts (the orange was really very orange), and once I stitched the first two parts, I was still not very happy with the colors. But I continued anyway, and eventually it turned into a really nice piece. And don’t ask me how it is possible, but all versions from the other participants (who all picked their own colors) are pretty! You can admire them here in the photo galery.

It was a delight to stitch this (I mean, I finished it within two weeks after receiving the last part, says it all, doesn’t it?) . Around the 15th each month I got excited: what’s the next part, and which stitches are used? And the party was complete when we were given the choice to do some drawn thread work as well in part 8!

I really enjoyed working on this thing, and I’ve learned a hell of a lot! At the end of the year Papillon Creations will organize another mystery SAL. I don’t know yet if I will participate on that one again, but I can definitely recommend it to anyone.

I have finally caught up

with my Castles in the Air. I was working on the last tower, when I received the mail telling me that part 23 is available for download. And it was about time to catch up, because part 23 is the last part!!!! I want to start it immediately.
But I’m also working on a SAL with the Yahoo group “Het borduur-paleis”, where I’m also running behind, so I’m first going to finish part 2 of that SAL.

(Almost) no stitches made
The last two weekends we went to the camping. There I’m working on Patchwork by Jan Houtman, where I’m working some of the patterns with Caron Waterlillies, wonderfully soft and smooth to work with. I’d been looking forward to working on it for weeks. Here’s a picture of how far I was. But…

I had also taken Unseen Academicals with me the first weekend, and the second one I took Making Money with me. Both written by Terry Pratchett (I just love his sense of humor, the way he can play with words is just brilliant at times) and with both books I had reached the state that it was hard to put them down. Clearly Pratchett is killing my stitching speed. It’s the same here at home, I’ve worked two whole weeks on this one small pattern of my Castles in the Air!

In a couple of weeks we’re again going to the camping, but I promised myself not to bring any Pratchett!

I did say….
Now it’s going quickly. I finished the first three motifs of my Castles in the Air! The first is the flower motif of part 20, the second is the gazebo from part 19, and hot off the needle the flower motif of part 17.

I wish I could say the same for my garden, but I constantly hit the restrictions of just having 1 green garbage bin. Admittedly, it’s my own fault, I should have started disposing of the rubbish during the winter.

Mijn camera is binnen!

Yes!

My camera arrived!
Yes! I’ve got myself a new photo camera! It’s a sweet little thingy, but she makes gorgeous close-ups! Look for instance at this lace spider, it is clearly visible that the thread has lost it’s twist somewhat. And this is just a quick snap shot, no special set-up or lighting, just click-clack and ready.

By the way, I’ve also finally finished the gates of my Castles in the Air (terrible to work with, gold thread), but now we’re moving ahead again. Sunday I started and finished part 12. And I now know what I want to do with the 6 middle elements: I’ll make 4 of the fantasy figures, but 1 on a different spot and 1 on a different spot and mirrored (or that’s what I’m going to try, anyway). And the two remaining places will be filled with the flower motives of the parts from the fantasy figures I’m not going to stitch. So from each original part I will stitch either a fantasie or a flower motive into my Castles in the Air. Here’s a picture of the whole thing so far, and a pretty detail of part 12.

Castles in the Air

Castles in the Air
I’m trying to catch up. Part 11 is finished, but part 15 is already available. I want to try to finish all parts before part 16 is released (isn't going to happen). Me running behind is actually a good thing for a change, because with part 9 I have made the cutwork band one stitch too many to the right, and I’m not sure anymore whether I kept the urn equal to the cutwork band, or back at it’s rightful place. The advantage of running behind is, that you don’t have to stick to the original order. At the same time I now know that the error will become abundantly clear when I’m on stitch off in the fence. So now I’m working the complete bottom edge (part 13,14 and 15) and after that I’ll make part 12 (which is going to connect to the urn underneath the erroneous cutwork band). It’s cheating a little, but no-one will see it when it’s finished

SAL deel 10

He, he, deel 10 is af!

SAL part 10
Pew, part 10 is finally finished! It took a while, because I had counted incorrectly, and therefore one of the Algerian eyelets (the green holes) was made over 4 by 5 (!) fabric threads. These are pulled eyelets, and when I pull something, I pull! It gets you beautiful eyelets, but it is terrible when you have to rip them again. I only discovered it when I wanted to make the last eyelet, while the error was made 16 eyelets earlier. There's already an error in this project, which unfortunately cannot be corrected (incorrectly cut threads cannot be glued back together again), but this I could correct. It just takes some extra time, but this project is worth it.

SAL: Even more Whitework!
This week we had a visitor from abroad. A good friend came to stay for a few days. It was very nice to have him around again, but nothing much gets done of course. But I made up for that this weekend by working on part 9 of my Castles in the Air. It's great to work on something so lovely. I did make 1 decision though: no more DMC metallic threads for me. It is just to nerve racking for me.

I did see a lot of nice things pass through Yahoo. There was another finish of one of Gigi's letters. The A definitely moved up a bit on my wishlist! I also hadn't heard of Humbugs or Pendibule before (two different things!), but I will definitely try them on my Xmas ornaments.

Castles in the Air part 8

I had just shown you part 7 of Castles in the Air, when the news arrived that part 8 was available on the Papillon Creations website. Naturally I had to take a quick look, and Oh goody! The speciality stitches version got an extra variaty: Cutwork! I was really annoyed that I still had to go to work. Cutwork is an embroider technique that you don’t usually find in patterns, even though it gives stunning results. And once you dare to make that first cut in your work, it is really very simple. The fact that I’ve stitched this part in just two evenings should say enough, I would think.

PS. Ik had jullie nog een totaalplaatje beloofd!
I had promised you a complete picture!

Castles in the Air part 7

Today I have finished part 7 of the Castles in the Air SAL van Papillon Creations. This SAL is full of speciality stitches, and for a large part stitchers are free to choose their own colors. So when I started this, I indulged in ordering a few Weeks Dye Works variegated threads. When they arrived, I had my doubts about the colors. But it works amazingly enough while stitching. And that’s the fun of this: Papillon Creations shows all pictures they receive of this SAL, and everyone is working with different threads, and they all turn out well! I’m impressed that Yvonne can design something like this!
I’ll show an overall picture when I need to move the scroll bars.
