Mijn Castles in the Air....

Is af!!! En hij is mooi geworden!!! Dit was mijn eerste SAL (Stitch Along), en gelijk een mystery SAL. Voor 1 Engelse pond kon ik in 2009 het eerste deel kopen. Daarna zouden de overige 22 delen gratis zijn. Op dat moment wist ik nog totaal niet hoe hij eruit zou zien. Het enige was ik wist waren de maten, dat ik kon kiezen tussen een kruissteek versie of een speciale steekjes versie (met hier en daar was kruissteekjes) en dat slechts een deel van de kleuren vast stonden. Ik moest zelf voor de 3 groene en 5 bloemkleuren zorgen.

Ga er maar aanstaan, kleuren kiezen terwijl je niet weet hoe ze gebruikt worden. Dus heb ik een aantal strengetjes uit mijn voorraad gevist, en een aantal Weeks Dye Works strengetjes besteld aan de hand van een plaatje op het beeldscherm, gewoon allemaal kleurtjes die ik er wel mooi uit vond zien. Toen de WDW strengetjes binnenkwamen had ik zo mijn twijfels (het oranje strengetje was wel heel erg oranje) , en toen ik de eerste twee delen geborduurd had, was ik nog steeds niet echt gelukkig met de kleurtjes. Maar ik ben toch doorgegaan, en uiteindelijk is het een heel mooi geheel geworden. En vraag me niet hoe het kan, maar dat geldt trouwens ook voor alle versies van andere deelneemsters die een andere kleurkeuze hebben gemaakt (die kun je hier bewonderen in de foto gallerij).

Het was een heerlijk ding om te borduren (ik heb hem binnen twee weken na het verschijnen van het laatste deel af, zegt wel genoeg, zou ik zo denken). Elke maand was het weer spannend: wat krijgen we erbij, en welke steekjes zitten erin? En toen we in deel 8 er ook nog openwerk bij kregen, was het feestje helemaal kompleet!

Ik heb met heel veel plezier aan dit ding gewerkt, en ik heb heel erg veel geleerd. Aan het eind van het jaar wordt er bij Papillon Creations weer een mystery SAL georganiseerd. Ik weet nog niet of ik dan weer meedoe, maar ik kan het een ieder wel aanraden.

Is Finished!!! And I just love it!!! This was my first SAL (Stitch Along), and a mystery SAL to boot. In 2009 I could buy the first part for 1 British pound. The 22 parts after that were free of charge. Back then, I didn’t know what it would look like. The only thing I knew was the size, that I could choose between a cross stitch and a speciality stitch version, and that only some of the colors were specified. I had to choose 3 greens and 5 flower colors myself.

You try and choose colors while you have no idea how they are going to be used. So I just pulled a few skeins from my stash, and I ordered a few Weeks Dye Works using the pictures from the ordering screen, just a few colors I liked. When the WDW skeins arrived, I had my doubts (the orange was really very orange), and once I stitched the first two parts, I was still not very happy with the colors. But I continued anyway, and eventually it turned into a really nice piece. And don’t ask me how it is possible, but all versions from the other participants (who all picked their own colors) are pretty! You can admire them here in the photo galery.

It was a delight to stitch this (I mean, I finished it within two weeks after receiving the last part, says it all, doesn’t it?) . Around the 15th each month I got excited: what’s the next part, and which stitches are used? And the party was complete when we were given the choice to do some drawn thread work as well in part 8!

I really enjoyed working on this thing, and I’ve learned a hell of a lot! At the end of the year Papillon Creations will organize another mystery SAL. I don’t know yet if I will participate on that one again, but I can definitely recommend it to anyone.
