Marker brede open zoom

He he, eindelijk, mijn Marker brede open zoom is af! Deze zoom was/is het onderwerp van les 1 van de e-cursus Marker borduren van Margreet van Needlesatwork.com. Hij is heel leuk om te doen, maar vereist wel veel concentratie. Nou is dat laatste waarschijnlijk ook omdat ik hem op redelijk fijn linnen geborduurd heb, nl. Cashel met 16 draadjes per cm.

Ik ben met de zoom de hoek om gegaan, hier hadden we geen beschrijving voor, maar ik ben het gewoon gaan proberen. En het resultaat is niet onaardig, al zeg ik het zelf. Ik vind alleen wel de lommertjes (de korte, dikke balkjes dwars op de naad) een beetje rommelig, maar dat komt misschien omdat ik er zo lang met mijn neus bovenop gezeten heb.

Deze open zoom heb ik langs twee van de vier zijden van mijn lap gedaan, en langs de andere zijden wil ik twee andere zomen gaan proberen te maken. Deze zomen zijn geen onderdeel van de cursus, maar staan in het boekje “Het handwerken van Marken” van Maria van Hemert. Maar ik denk dat ik eerst weer even verder ga met mijn vernaaide linten.

Yes, finally, my Marker wide open seam is finished! This seam was/is the subject of lesson 1 of the e-course Marker embroidery from Margreet at Needlesatwork.com. This seam is real fun to make, but it does require a lot of concentration. That last is probably for a large part caused by the fact that I’m stitching this on rather fine linen, Cashel with 16 threads per cm.

I’ve gone round the corner, we didn’t have a description for this, but I just went ahead and tried it. And the result is not too bad, I think. The only thing I’m not really happy with is the lommertjes (the short, fat bars across from the seam). I think they could be a bit more tidy, but that might be because I’ve been looking at it so closely.

I’ve stitched this open seam along two sides of my fabric, and along the other two sides I want to try and stitch two other seams. These seams are not part of the course, but I’ve found them in the little booklet from Maria van Hemert, “Het handwerken van Marken”. But I think I’m taking a little break to work on my vernaaide linten.

Ik ben druk bezig met zomen! Ik werk op ecru cashel linnen van 16 draden per centimeter dus het is allemaal erg klein. Het wordt wel heel fijntjes, maar het kost wel een hoop concentratie. Dit project bewijst trouwens dat ook bij mij de jaartjes beginnen te tellen: ik moet mijn bril (voor veraf) afzetten om mijn werk duidelijk te zien. En dat levert weer komische situaties op wanneer ik op moet kijken en mijn bril ergens tussen m'n lap verborgen zit.

More details when my seam is finished

I'm busy making a seam! I'm working on ecru cashel linnen of 16 threads per centimeter so it's all rather small. It's turning out quite dainty, but it takes a lot out of my concentration. By the way, this project proofs that even for me the years are starting to count: I need to take of my glasses (for the distance) to see my work clearly. And that results in comical situations where I have to look up while my glasses are somewhere hidden between the folds of my fabric.

Oplossing voor een borduurdip

Als ik een dipje heb en weer graag aan de slag wil, ga ik blog-hoppen. Ik begin bij een willekeurige handwerkblog (meestal een blog die ik zo af en toe lees) en ga dan linkjes naar andere blogs en/of websites volgen. Vaak is het zien van al het moois op handwerkgebied al genoeg om mij weer aan te zetten om zelf de naald weer op te pakken.

En soms kom je iets heel interessants tegen. Zo kwam ik via Nuttig en Fraai op de website van Margreet, Needle@work, terecht. Margreet maakt echt de mooiste dingen, en zij heeft zich de laatste tijd verdiept in Marker borduurwerk. Marken is een voormalig eiland gelegen in het IJsselmeer, met een uitgebreide borduurtraditie en  eigen technieken. Ik heb hier aan mogen ruiken met mijn snuffelcursus en ik wil daar al langer wat meer van weten.

En laat Margreet nu net een cursus Marker borduren starten! Ik heb me gelijk ingeschreven en ben op zoek gegaan naar mijn materialen. Naast de cursus heeft ze op haar website ook een gratis sampler van vernaaide (=geborduurde) linten en daar ben ik alvast mee begonnen. Ik heb hiervoor expres een grote lap genomen, want misschien kan ik een deel van de cursus ook in deze sampler verwerken. Of niet, dat zie ik nog wel.

Solution to a stitching dip

When I have a dip and want to get out of that, I go blog-hopping. I start at a random stitching blog (usually a blog I occasionally read) and then I follow hyperlinks to other blogs and/or websites. Usually looking at all the pretty things other people make is enough to make me pick up my needle again.

And sometimes you find something interesting. This time I hopped from Nuttig en Fraai to the website from Margreet: Needle@work. Margreet really makes the most gorgeous things, and lately she’s been studying Marker embroidery. Marken is a former island located in the Ijsselmeer, with an extended stitching tradition including their own specific techniques. I already encountered some of this during my snuffelcursus and for some time now I’ve been thinking of doing something with this.

And then Margreet starts with a course on Marker embroidery at exactly the right time! So I quickly registered and started looking for my materials. Beside this e-course she also has a free sampler of “vernaaide” (=embroidered) ribbons and I went ahead and started stitching. I deliberately used a large piece of fabric, for maybe I can incorporate some of the course in this sampler. Or maybe not, I’ll have to wait and see.

Door allerlei omstandigheden liep ik de laatste tijd een beetje met mijn ziel onder mijn arm. Hierdoor was mijn concentratie regelmatig ver te zoeken, maar ik heb me toch bezig proberen te houden. Eerst met mijn Historic Countries Sampler, en later met mijn Summer Tree of Stitches. Voor mijn gevoel had ik totaal geen vooruitgang geboekt, maar als ik nu de foto’s vergelijk met de voorgaande foto’s lijkt het toch alsof ik veel gedaan heb.

Bij de Historic Countries Sampler ben ik met het Spaanse deel bezig. Door de grootte van dit project kan ik hier eigenlijk alleen op zolder in mijn hobby ruimte aan dit project werken. En door de prachtige zomer die we dit jaar hebben is het daar regelmatig te warm om lekker te kunnen borduren. Dus ben ik met mijn Summer Tree of Stitches verder gegaan aangezien deze kleiner is en makkelijker mee te nemen. En nu is de tak met Octagonal Rhodes af. Deze tak heb ik geborduurd met Four-Leaf Clover van Crescent Colours. Ik werk nu aan de tak met Whipped en Woven Spiderweb Rose steken. Ik doe dit nu met twee draadjes, maar ik heb het idee dat dit mooier wordt met 1 draadje.

Ik ben wel lekker opgeschoten met mijn Queen Ring Shawl. Die had ik meegenomen op vakantie en ik heb inmiddels een derde van de puntjes van de rand af. Het breien met zulke dunne pennen en garens gaat steeds makkelijker. Ik betrap me er regelmatig op dat ik te nonchalant word, en dan ga ik fouten maken. En het terugbreien van kant met zulk fijne wol is geen aanrader. Maar ik ben erg blij met mijn vooruitgang.

Summer Tree of Stitches after

Due to various circumstances I’ve been a bit lost lately. Because of this my concentration was almost non-existant, but despite that I’ve tried to keep busy. First with my Historic Countries Sampler, and later with my Summer Tree of Stitches. It felt like I didn’t get anything done, but when I compare these photos with the previous ones, it looks like I got quite a bit done.

With the Historic Countries Sampler I’m working on the Spanish part. Due to the large size of this project really the only place I can work on this is in my stitchroom on the attic. And because of the gorgeous summer we’ve been having this year it was often too hot to stitch comfortably. Therefore I switched to my Summer Tree of Stitches since that project is a lot smaller and a lot more portable. And so now the branch with Octagonal Rhodes is finished. This branch I’ve stitched with Four-Leaf Clover by Crescent Colours. I’m now working on the branch with woven and whipped Spiderweb Rose Stitches.

 I’m doing this now with two threads, but I think it might be prettier with just 1 thread.

However, I did make a lot of progress on my Queen Ring Shawl. I took that with me on my holiday and now I’ve finished a third of all the edge points. Knitting with such small needles and such thin thread is constantly getting easier. I regularly find that I’m becoming too nonchalant, and that’s when I’m starting to make errors. And knitting back lace made of such fine wool is not something I can recommend. But I’m quite pleased with my progress.

Part 8

Even een snel berichtje om wat plaatjes te laten zien. Ik heb namelijk deel 8 en 9 van AW80 af. De namen van de steken worden steeds mooier, wat dacht je van de Mossoul steek of Bokhara couching? Maar met de steken diagrammen van Papillon Creations is het borduren van deze steekjes slechts een zaak van goed tellen. En dat blijkt nog wel eens lastig te zijn. In deel 9 zit daarom een onderdeel net een steekje te hoog, maar dat is gelukkig niet storend.

Just a quick note to show a few pictures. I finished part 8 and 9 of AW80, you see. The names of the stitches get prettier each time, what to think of Mossoul stitch, or Bokhara couching? But with the stitch diagrams from Papillon Creations stitching these stitches only a case of counting. And that is sometimes rather difficult. That's why a bit in part 9 is a stitch too high, but not so you'd notice.

Part 6

De nieuwe SAL herinnerde me eraan dat ik met nog een andere SAL bezig ben, namelijk die van Papillon Creations genaamd Around the World in 80 Stitches (ofwel AW80). En daar loop ik behoorlijk achter. De laatste keer was ik nog bezig met deel 6 met daarin de griekse kruis, Rhodes en Cretan steken.

Hier zat niet veel werk meer in, dus toen gauw doorgegaan met deel 7. Heel leuk om te doen, de twee-zijdige turkse driehoek steek en de Lefkhara kant steken waren niet echt moeilijk. maar die Malteser kruizen waren toch een behoorlijke uitdaging. Ik ben dan ook nog niet echt tevreden met twee van die kruizen, misschien dat ik die nog wel eens overnieuw doe. Maar nu eerst gauw verder met deel 8 en 9.

The new SAL reminded me that I am also working on a different SAL, the one from Papillon Creations named Around the World in 80 Stitches (AW80 in short). And I’m well behind on that one. The last time I worked on it, I was busy with part 6 with the Greek cross, Rhodes and Cretan stitches. 

Part 7 finished

There wasn’t much left to do, so then I quickly moved on to part 7. This was fun to do, the two-sided triangular Turkish stitch and the Lefkhara lace stitches were not that difficult, but the Maltese crosses were a bit of a challenge. I’m not very satisfied with the end result of two of them, I might redo them at some point. But first on with parts 8 and 9.

Tree of Stitches

Het is hier even stil geweest, ik weet het. Het leven zat/zit even behoorlijk tegen en dat had ook gevolgen voor mijn borduren. Ik wilde dolgraag met mijn nieuwe draadjes aan mijn Trees of Stitches gaan beginnen, maar ik wilde ook graag mijn Stroke of Midnight af hebben. Alleen, Stroke of Midnight had alleen nog maar een miljoen steelsteekjes nodig. Daar wordt hij extra mooi van, maar het is absoluut niet iets wat ik met veel plezier doe. En omdat ik niet lekker in mijn vel zit, ging dat me zo tegen staan dat ik helemaal niets meer deed. Dus helaas kan ik nog steeds geen complete Stroke of Midnight tonen.

Afgelopen donderdag zat ik er echt helemaal doorheen en er moest gauw iets veranderen. Dus heb ik het besluit genomen om Stroke of Midnight toch maar aan de kant te leggen (helaas) en toch met mijn Trees of Stitches te gaan beginnen. En dat heeft me gelijk over mijn borduur dip heen geholpen! De stammen van beide bomen, en de eerste blaadjes zijn een feit.

Ik borduur deze bomen op 13 draads (32 count) Belfast Linnen die ik van L. en W. gekregen heb. De stam van SToS (Summer Tree of Stitches, de nieuwste SAL van Abi Gurden op TheStitchSpecialists) heb ik gedaan met Caron Waterlilies no 099 Cocoa en de stam van ToS (de kleinere Tree of Stitches, 1 van de eerste SALs van Abi) heb ik gedaan met Caron Waterlilies no 196 Sable.  Ik had oorspronkelijk in de winkel 1 kleurtje uitgekozen voor beide stammen, maar die vond ik achteraf toch te groen. Deze Waterlilies had ik nog over van mijn Patchwork project.

Leaf Stitch

Het vogeltje op SToS heb ik gedaan met wat restjes katoen, waarvan ik niet weet wat het is. De eerste blaadjes op deze boom bestaan uit Diamond Ray Stitches, gedaan met Crescent Colours English Ivy. Ik werk met 1 draadje, want met twee draadjes wordt het zo erg vol en zie je de steekjes niet meer Alleen de stam heb ik met twee draadjes geborduurd, want die moet stevig zijn om stormen te doorstaan.

De eerste blaadjes op ToS zijn gemaakt met Leaf Stitch. Deze heb ik geborduurd met Simply Wool van Gentle Arts in de kleur Dried Thyme. Dit is een wollen draad en dat voelt heel anders aan en ik realiseerde me dat het wel heel lang geleden was dat ik met wol geborduurd heb. Dit is trouwens de kleur die ik origineel voor de stam had geplanned.

A dip

It’s been quiet around here, I know. Life was/is rather hard at the moment and that had it’s effect on my stitching. I really wanted to start my Trees of Stitches with my new threads, but I also really wanted to finish my Stroke of Midnight. However, Stroke of Midnight only needed a zillion back stitches. Those will make it extra pretty, but it is definitely not something I enjoy doing. And because I was down,  I didn’t want to do them which resulted in me doing nothing at all. So regrettably I still can’t show off a completed Stroke of Midnight.

Diamond Ray Stitch

Last Thursday I hit rock bottom and something needed to change quickly. So I decided to set aside Stroke of Midnight (alas!) and start my Trees of Stitches. And that helped me to get my stitching mojo back. The base of both tress, and the first leave have been stitched.

I’m stitching these trees on 32 count Belfast Linnen I was given as a birthday present by L. and W. The base of SToS (Summer Tree of Stitches, the latest SAL of Abi Gurden on TheStitchSpecialists) I did with Caron Waterlilies no 099 Cocoa and the base of ToS (the smaller Tree of Stitches, 1 of the first SAL’s by Abi) I did with Caron Waterlilies no. 196 Sable. In the shop I originally picked a different colour for both bases, but I thought that one was too green. These Waterlilies I had left over from my Patchwork project.

The little birdy on SToS I stitched with some left over cotton threads I don’t know anything about. The first leaves on this tree are made with Diamond Ray Stitches, done with Crescent Colours English Ivy. I work with 1 thread, because to me two threads will make the stitch too crowded and you won’t see the individual stitches anymore. The base I did do with two threads, because that has to be strong to survive any storm.

Summer Tree of Stitches

The first leaves on ToS are made of Leaf Stitches. I stitched these with  Simply Wool from Gentle Arts in the colour Dried Thyme. This is a wool thread and that feels totally different and I realized that is has been a very long time indeed that I last stitched with wool. By the way, this is the colour I originally planned for the bases of the trees.
