Even wat anders

Ik ga morgen wel weer verder met mijn verslag van de snuffelcursus, maar nu wil ik toch echt even wat anders laten zien. Ik heb al wel eens verteld dat ik lid ben van verschillende Yahoo groepen. Een van de redenen hiervoor is om ideeen op te doen, en om met anderen te leren en/of te praten over wat me bezig houd. Dus met het verschuiven van mijn interesses van puur kruissteek naar ander aftelbaar werk, werd het tijd dat ik ook eens bij andere groepen ging kijken.

En dat bleek nog best moeilijk. De meeste groepen zijn of alleen kruissteek, of alleen vrij borduren zoals crewel en aanverwante technieken, of machine borduren. Machine viel meteen af, ik ben niet van plan ooit zo’n ding te kopen, en vrij borduren vind ik toch nog wel een brug te ver voor mij. Maar groepen waarbij het draait om aftelbaar borduurwerk anders dan kruissteekjes, daar zijn er niet zo veel van.

Maar ik heb er 1 gevonden: TheStitchSpecialists. Het praatje op de home-pagina stond me wel aan, de oprichters hadden hetzelfde probleem ondervonden als ik, en zijn toen zelf maar een groep begonnen. En het borduurtje (The Great Escape) erbij was precies wat ik hoopte te vinden. Dus ik heb me ingeschreven, en wat bleek, het borduurtje was een ontwerp van Aby Gurden, de oprichter van de groep, en werd op dit moment aangeboden als een SAL op de groep. Ik kon nog meedoen met de SAL, dus heb ik me gauw ingeschreven, een lapje en wat garens bij elkaar gezocht en ben ik begonnen.

Op dit moment is het wachten op deel 9 (van de 18), maar ik vind het toch zo’n leuk borduurtje! Van alle steekjes die er nu in verwerkt zitten, kende ik er nog maar 4. En van elk steekje krijg je net genoeg oefening in dit werkje om de steek door te krijgen. De vorige SAL van deze groep, Tree of Stitches ook van Aby Gurden, was ook al zo’n mooi werkje met allemaal verschillende steekjes. Het is helaas niet meer op de groep te krijgen en helaas zit ik op dit moment wat krap bij kas, maar anders had ik gevraagd of ik dat patroon kon kopen.

Something different for now.
I’ll continue my report on the snuffelcursus tomorrow, but now I wanted to show something different. I’ve already said that I’m a member of a few Yahoo groups. One of the reasons for this is to get ideas from other stitchers, and to learn from and talk with others about my passion. So with my interests shifting from purely cross stitch to other countable projects, it was high time for me to start looking at other groups.

And that turned out to be quite tricky. Most groups concentrate either on just cross stitch, or just free stitching like crewel and such, or machine embroidery. Machine embroidery was not interesting for me, I’m not planning on buying such a machine, and free stitching is for now still too free for me. But there aren’t that many groups that concentrate on countable stitches other than cross stitch.

But I found 1: TheStitchSpecialists. I liked the welcome on the home page, the founders had encountered the same problem as I, and therefore had started their own group. And the embroidery picture (The Great Escape) on the home page was exactly what I’d hoped to find. So I joint, and then it turned out that the embroidery was a design by Aby Gurden, the founder of the group, and at the moment it is offered as a SAL to group members. I could still participate, so I quickly registered, grabbed a bit of fabric and some threads and off I went.

Right now I have to wait for part 9 (of 18), but I just love this piece. Of all the stitches incorporated into this so far, I’d only done 4 previously. And there’s just enough practice of each stitch in this little owl to get the hang of the stitch. The previous SAL of this group, Tree of Stitches, also design from Aby Gurden, was also a gorgeous piece with all sorts of stitches. Regrettably, that’s no longer available on the group, but Aby might be willing to sell the pattern. As soon as my bank account allows it, I’ll ask her.
