Toch wat vooruitgang

Zoals ik al had verwacht, ben ik de laatste paar dagen weer niet veel verder gekomen met mijn sneeuwvalk UFO. Pa en Ma logeren hier en dan ga ik ’s avonds natuurlijk niet ongezellig boven zitten borduren. Ik heb deze week dan wel niet veel eraan gedaan, en de vorige UFO weken ook al niet, maar toch wil ik mijn huidige staat even tonen. Want zo stilletjes aan, met hier en daar een paar steekjes zit er toch duidelijk vooruitgang sinds ik hem de laatste keer hier heb getoond. Het nadeel van werken in een rollerframe is dat je niet even snel het hele werkstuk kunt zien, maar met deze link kun je de hele lap zien.

Some progress after all.

As I expected, I didn’t get to do much on my Gyr Falcon UFO. Mum and Dad are staying here and I’m social enough not to disappear upstairs to stitch. However, I might not have done much this week, and the last few UFO weeks, but I still want to show you my progress. Because with a stitch here and a few stitches there the progress since last time I showed this birdie is clearly visible. The problem with working on a roller frame is that I can’t easily show you the whole project, but with this link you can see the full picture.

Eerste Fairy af

De afgelopen week ben ik lekker opgeschoten met mijn Fairy Flower Garden Mandala. Het is gewoon een genot om met al die zijde draadjes te werken: ze zijn heerlijk zacht en ook nog eens warm van kleur. Dus voor je het weet heb je een engeltje klaar! Ik heb wel eerst haar bestaande vleugel uit moeten halen, want die zat een steekje te laag, waardoor haar lijfje in het gedrang kwam.

Ik hoop dat de UFO die deze week op de planning staat net zoveel vooruitgang boekt, maar dat betwijfel ik. Vanaf morgen komen mijn Pa en Ma ons gezelschap houden voordat ze volgende week officieel en definitief naar Duitsland emigreren. En voor die tijd moet er toch nog wel een hoop versjouwd worden, en of ik dan de fut nog heb om een naald vast te houden?!?

First Fairy is finished

Last week I made good progress with my Fairy Flower Garden Mandala. It is such a joy to work with those silk threads: they’re terribly soft and beautifully colored as well. So before you know it, you’ve finished this little fairy! And that despite the fact that I had to rip her first wing. It was one stitch too low, and because of that I was getting into trouble with her body.

I hope the UFO I’m planning on working on this week will also go this well, but somehow I doubt that. From tomorrow my Mum and Dad will be staying with us, before they officially and definitely emigrate to Germany next week. And before that can happen, a lot of stuff still needs to be shifted and I don’t know if I’ll have some strength left to lift a needle.

Heart of Hearts

Even snel een update waar ik nu weer mee

bezig ben. Eind vorige week kreeg ik een leuk valentijn cadeautje: Heart of Hearts, een ontwerp van Abi Gurden dat ze beschikbaar stelde voor de mensen die deelnemen of -namen aan de SALs van TheStitchSpecialists. Heerlijk, allemaal hartjes in verschillende steekjes. Dus ik ben gauw aan de slag gegaan. Eerst met deze rode. Maar daar had ik de perle voor het hardanger nog niet voor in huis. Dus toen ik zover was, zat ik van wat moet ik nou. Dus toen het patroontje nog maar een keer geborduurd, maar dan wit op donker voor een totaal ander effect. En dat is nu af. M'n perle heb ik nog steeds niet, dus morgen ga ik maar weer aan iets anders werken.

Heart of Hearts

Just a quick update on what I'm working on now. At the end of last week I received a nice valentine pressy: Heart of Hearts, a design by Abi Gurden that she made available to anyone who participates or participated to a SAL on TheStitchSpecialists. A bunch of lovely hearts, using all kinds of stitches. So I quickly started, first with this red one. But I lacked the perle for the hardanger bit. So when I couldn't go on, I decided to stitch the pattern another time, but then white on a dark background to get a totally different effect. And I finished that today. I still haven't got my perle, so I'll have to work on something different tomorrow.

Okay, ik had dus gezegd dat ik met m’n maaswerk zou wachten tot ik overleg zou hebben met Tineke. Maar ons kent ons en het zat me niet lekker (*** waarom lukt me dat nou niet). En toen plaatste Mary Corbett ook nog eens een stukje over mazen op haar blog met de opmerking dat het zo simpel was en met een link naar een aantal prachtige middeleeuwse maas patronen, ben ik toch weer in mijn boeken gedoken om te kijken of ik toch niet wat verder kon komen.

Mijn boek "Mary Thomas's Embroidery book" toonde me hoe ik heel simpel een gat zou kunnen bedekken, door eigenlijk alleen te weven, en alleen op de keerpunten een klein steekje door de stof te doen. En Teresa de Dillmont toonde me hoe ik een damast reparatie zou moeten doen. Dit was nog wel even puzzelen, en eigenlijk wilde ik het doen met donker en lichtblauw, maar dan was het een stuk moeilijker om te zien. Zelfs nu met oranje moest ik al mijn loep erbij gebruiken, want anders zaten de draden gekruist.

En uiteraard kon ik het niet laten om ook zo’n mooi Egyptisch patroontje te maken. Uiteindelijk is mijn vakje dus toch voor de laatste les vol gekomen. Had ik van tevoren precies geweten wat er allemaal in zou komen, dan had ik het een beetje beter uitgemeten allemaal. Nu zijn de verschillende vakjes allemaal een verschillende maat, en sommige midden patroontjes zouden wat verschoven kunnen, maar om nu de hele boel weer uit te gaan halen… Nee, zo gek ben ik ook weer niet!

Okay, so I said I’d wait with my darning exercises until I could discuss it with Tineke. But you know me and it kept on nagging me (*** why can’t I do that). And then Mary Corbett wrote a blog on darning in which she stated that it was easy and with links to a number of very beautiful medieval darning patterns. So I went back to my books to see if I really couldn’t figure it out.

My copy of Mary Thomas's Embroidery Book showed me a very simple way of covering a hole, basically by just weaving and only doing a single stitch through the fabric at the turning points. And Teresa de Dillmont showed me how I could do a damast repair. It was still tricky, and originally I started doing this one with dark and light blue, but that turned out to be very difficult to see. Even with the orange I needed to use my loupe, otherwise the blue threads got crossed.

And I couldn’t resist to stitch one of those pretty Egyptian patterns. In the end my square was filled in time for our last lesson. Had I known in advance exactly what I wanted to put into the square, I would have measured it a bit more carefully. Now most of the squares have a different size, and some of the patterns in the middle should be shifted a little bit, but to redo the lot…. I’m mad, but even I am not that mad!

Het tweede vakje huiswerk na cursusdag 4 was voor Assisi borduren. Hierbij wordt het onderwerp gevormd door uitsparingen in de achtergrond. Het is een combinatie van holbein borduren en kruissteek. Eerst worden de contouren van het onderwerp met de holbein steek op de stof gezet, en vervolgens wordt de ruimte eromheen opgevuld met kruissteek. Tegenwoordig worden Assisi patronen veelal over twee weefsel draden geborduurd, maar vroeger gebeurde dit veel over 3.

Ik heb m’n hele lap een beetje traditiegetrouw proberen op te zetten dus dit werkje heb ik over 3 gedaan. En dan denk je dus: de helft minder steekjes, dat is appeltje – eitje, die heb ik zo in elkaar. Dus niet. De holbein ging prima, maar dan de achtergrond borduren. Hierbij moet je heel goed uitkijken dat je achtergrond buiten de holbein lijntjes blijft. Het blijkt een stuk makkelijker te zijn om eerst de kruissteekjes te doen, en dan pas de lijntjes, maar dat hoort niet bij Assisi.

Ik heb voor een leeuw gekozen omdat dit zowel een symbool van Nederland is, als van Engeland. En met 1 zoon geboren in Engeland en 1 geboren in Nederland vond ik het wel leuk dat ik ze op deze manier kon verenigen.

Our second square homework after day 4 was meant for Assisi embroidery. With this form of embroidery the background is filled with stitches, while the design is only indicated by lines. It is a combination of double running stitches and cross stitch. First the design is stitched on the fabric using double running stitches, and then the background is filled with cross stitch. Nowadays most Assisi patterns are stitched over two fabric threads, but originally this was usually done over 3 threads.

I’ve worked my entire piece as much according to tradition as I could, so I did this one over 3 fabric threads. And so you think: half the amount of stitches, that’s easy – piecy, I’ll stitch that in an evening. Not so. The double running stitches went well, but stitching the background was a different story. You have to work very carefully to make sure that your background stays outside of the lines. It turned out a lot easier to first do the cross stitches, and after that the running stitches, but that’s not the point with Assisi.

I choose to stitch this lion, because it’s both a national symbol for The Netherlands, and for England. And with 1 son being born in England, and 1 here in The Netherlands I thought it was a nice idea to unite the two this way.

Fairy Flower Garden Mandala

Ze was al een tijdje aan het lonken,

ze wilde wel weer eens een stukje groeien. Ze gooide al haar charmes in de strijd: de heerlijk zachte zijden garens, de prachtige kralen en kristallen en uiteraard al die bijzondere steekjes. Dus na alle verbouwingen en verhuizingen van de afgelopen twee jaar, heb ik eindelijk mijn Fairy Flower Garden Mandala weer eens uit de kast gehaald.

En ze stelde me niet teleur, ik heb de afgelopen week regelmatig moeite gehad met tijd vrijmaken voor onbelangrijke zaken als eten en slapen. Ik ben dus ook lekker opgeschoten. De onderste drie libelles zijn helemaal af, met de bijbehorende kantachtige achtergrond. En ik ben zelfs al weer een klein stukje met de vleugels van m’n eerste fairy bezig. Maar helaas, nu ga ik me eerst weer op mijn huiswerk storten.

She had been tempting me for a while now, she wanted to grow a little. She pulled out all of her charms: the lovely silk threads, the beautiful beads and crystals, and of course the speciality stitches. So after all of the moving house and redecorating of the past two years, I finally pulled my Fairy Flower Garden Mandala out of the closes.

And she didn’t disappoint me, last week I regularly had some difficulty making time available for unimportant things like eating and sleeping. So I got a lot done. The bottom three dragonflies are completely done, including the doily background. And I even started a little bit on the wings for my first fairy. But alas, now I have to concentrate on my homework again.

Twee weken geleden hadden we al weer de vierde les. Iedereen is nog steeds vreselijk enthousiast bezig met het zoeken naar leuke patroontjes voor op hun lap. De lappen beginnen al aardig vol te raken, zelfs die van Klaartje, die nu voor de tweede keer gastvrouw van deze cursus is en het borduren er voor de gezelligheid bij doet.

Trouwens, de lappen die Tineke (Tinbergen, onze docent) iedere keer mee brengt zijn echt schitterend om te zien. Voor elke techniek heeft ze minstens 1 lap met allemaal voorbeeld borduurtjes. Hoe ze die lappen mooi houdt, Joost mag het weten. Iedereen zit eraan te voelen en te friemelen (borduursters mogen dit graag doen als ze de kans krijgen), want de achterkant willen we uiteraard ook zien. Uit die lappen blijkt ook heel goed dat ze de verschillende technieken echt bestudeerd heeft. Dat merk je ook iedere keer weer als ze een nieuwe techniek uitlegt. Zo wist ze te vertellen dat Holbein borduurwerk zo heet, omdat de schilder Holbein dit zo mooi op zijn schilderijen had vastgelegd.

Maar goed, deze les ging over stoppen/mazen en Assisi borduren. Thuisgekomen ben ik meteen begonnen met mijn stop vakje. De “gewone” stop patroontjes gaan me goed af. Maar ik wilde dus ook een “echte” stop maken, met horizontale en verticale draden, en dat wil nog niet echt lukken. Zodra ik over moet stappen op het weven, ga ik de mist in, en ik heb geen idee wat ik fout doe. Dus vraag ik de volgende les wel hoe het nou moet. Voorlopig laat ik het stoppen hier even bij, en dan ga ik straks mijn assisi huiswerk maken.

Two weeks ago we had our 4th lesson. Everyone is still enthusiastically searching for fun patterns to put on their embroidery. The fabrics are gradually filling up, even the one from Klaartje, who is now hostess to this course for the second time, and she participates just for fun whenever she can.

By the way, the samplers Tineke (Tinbergen, our teacher) brings each time are absolutely stunning. For each technique she has at least 1 sampler with all sorts of example stitches. Heaven only knows how she keeps those samplers looking so nice. Everyone is constantly touching and fumbling them (embroiderers are known to do that whenever they have a chance), because naturally we also want to see the back. From those samplers it’s plain to see how well she knows the various techniques. That’s also plain when she explains each new technique.

Anyway, this lesson was on darning and Assisi embroidery. At home I immediately started on the darning square. The “ordinary” darning patterns weren’t that hard to do. But I also wanted to make a “proper” darn, with horizontal and vertical threads, and so far I haven’t succeeded yet. As soon as I have to switch from stitching to weaving, the pattern goes astray, and I haven’t got a clue what I’m doing wrong. So I will ask at our next meeting. I’ll leave it for now, and start my Assisi homework.
